How much does it cost to charge an electric car?
Averaged over the year, popular electric cars drive 100 km for €3.26–€4.05 charged at home, €5.17–€6.42 at public AC posts and €6.12–€7.60 at fast chargers. For comparison, fuel per 100 km: Škoda Octavia Combi (petrol) €11.67 and Škoda Octavia Combi TDI (diesel) €11.83.
Prices as of 8 October 2026: home electricity €0.23/kWh, €0.16/kWh on the night tariff (12-month spot average with network fees, state fees and VAT), public AC €0.29/kWh and fast charging €0.39/kWh. At home and on AC about 12% of the energy is lost in charging.
Assumptions: 20,000 km a year, 5 years, bought with cash, 80% of charging at home, fuel and electricity prices rising 5% a year; prices as of 8 October 2026. Every assumption can be changed in the calculator.

Questions and answers
Is charging at night cheaper?
Yes: charged at home only on the night tariff, the Tesla Model Y drives 100 km for about €3.50; only on the day tariff, €5.03. By default the calculator assumes 70% of home charging happens at night.
How much does charging cost in winter?
In winter an EV uses 30% more energy by default and electricity costs more: charged at home, the Tesla Model Y drives 100 km for about €3.17 in summer and €5.14 in winter. On cold days it also uses electricity to warm the cabin and battery.
How much does an electric car spend on charging in a year?
At 20,000 km a year with 80% charged at home: BYD Sealion 7 €929, Tesla Model Y €907, Tesla Model Y Long Range €907, Tesla Model 3 €747, Tesla Model 3 Long Range €747, Toyota bZ4X €838, Škoda Elroq €801 and Kia EV3 €795 in the first year.
How much does a home charger cost?
The calculator counts a home wallbox with installation at €1,300 by default. The price depends on the charger and the electrical work; you can change it for each car.
