Estonian car tax calculator 2026
The Estonian car tax has two parts: an annual tax, and a one-off registration fee paid when the car is first registered in Estonia. Both depend on the car’s CO₂ emissions, gross mass and age.
For example, a new Toyota RAV4 pays €118 annual tax in 2026 and a €1,050 registration fee; the electric Tesla Model Y pays €56 and €182. Enter your car’s details to see its tax for each year up to 2031.

How the car tax is calculated
Annual tax
- Annual tax = €50 base + age coefficient × (CO₂ part + mass part).
- CO₂ part for a passenger car: 118–150 g/km: €3 per gram, 151–200 g/km: €3.50 per gram and over 200 g/km: €4 per gram. A WLTP figure is used as it is, an NEDC figure is multiplied by 1.21; if the CO₂ is unknown, it is worked out from power, kerb mass and age.
- Mass part: €0.40 per kilogram of gross mass over 2,000 kg (over 2,200 kg for plug-in hybrids), up to €400. Electric cars have no CO₂ part and their mass part starts at 2,400 kg (up to €440).
- Cars with more than 7 seats are taxed at van (N1) rates. A parent receiving child benefit gets €100 off one car’s annual tax for each child.
Registration fee
The registration fee is paid once, when the car is registered in Estonia for the first time. The rates rise in 2028 and 2031.
| Part | 2025–2027 | 2028–2030 | 2031+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | €150 | €225 | €300 |
| CO₂ part | 1–117 g/km: €5 per gram, 118–150 g/km: €10 per gram, 151–200 g/km: €30 per gram and over 200 g/km: €50 per gram | 1–93 g/km: €5 per gram, 94–150 g/km: €15 per gram, 151–200 g/km: €45 per gram and over 200 g/km: €65 per gram | 1–49 g/km: €5 per gram, 50–93 g/km: €10 per gram, 94–150 g/km: €20 per gram, 151–200 g/km: €60 per gram and over 200 g/km: €80 per gram |
| Mass part | €2/kg over 2,000 kg (plug-in hybrid 2,200 kg), up to €2,000 | €3/kg over 2,000 kg (plug-in hybrid 2,200 kg), up to €3,000 | €4/kg over 2,000 kg (plug-in hybrid 2,200 kg), up to €4,000 |
| Electric car mass part | €2/kg over 2,400 kg, up to €2,200 | €3/kg over 2,400 kg, up to €3,300 | €4/kg over 2,400 kg, up to €4,400 |
Age coefficients
The age coefficient multiplies the CO₂ and mass parts of the annual tax and of the registration fee. Age is in full years since first registration.

Questions and answers
What is the car tax on an electric car?
An electric car’s annual tax is the €50 base plus a mass part if its gross mass is over 2,400 kg. Annual tax and registration fee of new electric cars in 2026: BYD Sealion 7 €144 and €620, Tesla Model Y €56 and €182, Tesla Model Y Long Range €97 and €384, Tesla Model 3 €50 and €150, Tesla Model 3 Long Range €50 and €150, Toyota bZ4X €98 and €390, Škoda Elroq €150 and €650 and Kia EV3 €50 and €150.
How does the car’s age affect the tax?
The annual tax starts to fall in the car’s fifth year (coefficient 0.92); at 15 years the coefficient is 0.10. A car of 20 years or more pays only the €50 base. The registration fee falls from the first year.
Do families with children get a discount?

How much does the registration fee rise in 2028 and 2031?
The base is €150 in 2026, €225 in 2028 and €300 in 2031, and the CO₂ and mass rates rise too. For a new Toyota RAV4: €1,050, €1,485 and €2,045.
Is the car tax being abolished?
In October 2026 bills to abolish the car tax (982 SE and 1010 SE) were before the Riigikogu. The calculator follows the law in force; in the cost calculator the tax can be switched off from a chosen year.
